What are Bluetooth Beacons?

A short introduction on Bluetooth Low Energy Beacons

Beacons or better Bluetooth Beacons, are small devices that periodically transmit a signal within a range of 50 to 100 meters sending a small amount of data (Usually their UUID unique identifier) although there are new beacons that can transmit data light light presence, pressure, velocity, etc.

Beacons are usually battery operated or can be powered through a USB cable. Beacons

come in different shapes and colors and can also come in the form of a wearable like below.

When compared to GPS devices, beacons can provide more accurate information and can be used for indoor location.

The majority of the beacons use BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) technology consuming less power, smaller range and less data transmission.

Beacons have many applications like anti theft properties, location navigation etc. that will be explained in details on later post.
